Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA)
The Civil Aviation Safety Association (CASA) recently undertook an ambitious website overhaul, looking to simplify the information architecture by reducing the number of pages and the site structure. A key part of this was significantly reducing the number of web pages on the site by simplifying the writing and eliminating duplication.
Stitch Communications worked on the highly technical aircraft licencing and maintenance section. We were tasked with over 24 web pages, with multiple internal and external links and a variety of forms required to acquire or maintain individual and business qualifications and licences to work on private and commercial planes.
Due to the highly-specialised nature of the information and its need to comply with federal and international legislation, we worked with a number of subject matter experts from within CASA to gain a comprehensive understanding of the processes, relevant legislation and ongoing requirements. With this understanding, we were able to greatly shorten website copy without losing meaning and while ensuring full terms and titles were used when necessary.
We used CASA's preferred online content management system, Gather Content, to work with area specialists and the communications team to show progress and collaborate as required.
Following our extensive work with subject matter experts and an understanding of the site's ultimate goal, Stitch Communications was able to better advise of the information architecture of the site and further refined the proposed website structure provided by an external auditor.
The result was just eight pages of information that succinctly delivered the information to a range of stakeholders required in a much more streamlined and intuitive format. This has made it easier for individuals and businesses to ensure they comply with all legislative requirements while simultaneously reducing the number of enquiries CASA has had to respond to.
